It has been quite some time since my last blog post and a whole lot has happened. I'll touch on everything in time but wanted to start off by saying our little princess is here! Not only is she here but she is a month old! A MONTH, one whole month!!!! No, I can't even believe it. I truly feel like I just blinked.
In just thins short time I have learned so much. First of all, there is so much more to babies that I ever imagined especially when it comes to feedings. So today I wanted to share what I found to be my absolute must have products to make feedings run smoothly for me! I wanted to touch on this specific topic first because feedings are top priority and anything to make feedings easier is a godsend!
In the hospital, they told me that in a week or two my milk would come in and it would be no big deal. LIES!!!! The day I got home I went and as gracefully as I could manage sat on the couch with my mini me and the hubs. I looked at him and said how happy I was we were home and as soon as I said it I felt this insane sensation, as if my boobs turned into water balloons on steroids. Troy just says “Jesus your boobs are huge!” I ran to the bathroom and sure enough, they exploded. I did the only thing I knew and tried to feed Annabelle but she could hardly latch, they were hard as rocks. I even tried to release some milk myself by using techniques I was taught before I went home and I couldn’t even get anything out. Due to us going home on a holiday and also due to her coming early I did not have my breast pump at home with me so my mom and sister went out and got me a hand pump. I tried as best as I could for hours and only managed between the two of them to get half an ounce out. By midnight they had become so engorged that I couldn’t put my arms to my side and picking up Annabelle was extremely painful. Even so I kept trying to feed her as much as possible and let me tell you breastfeeding was way more painful than labor and that’s no joke!
By morning I looked like I had a botched boob job and I was in so much pain I couldn’t stand it anymore so I called the hospital, since I was released just the day before they told me to come back and they could help me release the milk with their machines and that’s where product number 3 comes in. You can rent this machine from the hospital for a small fee and let me tell you it was amazing! It does pretty much what any pump would do however it was so much easier on me and hurt a smidge less. It worked enough to where it was worth it to rent the pump till I could get the engorgement under control which by the way took about 2 – 2.5 weeks.
Once I got into a routine down the rest of the products fell into place.
Okay this is by far the most used items I own! I have the lawn and the grass pad and I’ll tell you why. Since I pump and feed I go through a lot of bottles and parts. I also like to pump in my room so taking everything upstairs and back again started to become a pain, this is where the counter top drying rack came in. At night, I would load it up with everything I needed for a night’s worth of pumping and feeding while the left-over parts were on the lawn drying for my morning routine. The twig and the stem are amazing for all the little pieces like the nipples and the white filter parts that go with the Dr. Brown bottles.
I originally was against these bottles and I’ll admit it’s because of all the pieces and I’m low key lazy. However, after my boobs exploded I can tell you these bottles were the best thing possible. Since I still wanted to breast feed after the pain subsided I needed something that would mimic the flow of the breast and the Dr. Browns level 1 nipples are the slowest flow nipples out their folks! You can also see the air bubbles going out and not into poor baby’s stomach so that was a huge bonus as well! I have nothing but good things to say about these and got over my laziness real quick! I did get the standard three pack and then went ahead and got the gift set as well because it was a killer deal and I mean killer! It is so amazing to not have to worry if bottles are cleaned and dry and ready to go. At first I was working with just one bottle… Never again! It’s good to note that the gift set comes with the brush that is listed on number 5.
Medela Symphoy (can be rented from your hospitals pharmacy)
I recommend this solely because of me being engorged. If you can skip this horrible stage in breastfeeding your normal pump will do just fine.
Love love love LOVE this soap. I started out using Dawn dish soap because I wash everything by hand and thought it was the best thing to do. About two weeks into the bottle routine I started to notice my milk smelling like soap and it horrified me. I thought I was feeding our child soap milk. I went and checked every bottle and part to make sure soap was fully out of it and no soap suds to be found. I then washed them in the dishwasher and still they smelled like soap. I did some research and found that Babyganics are totally organic, no nasty chemicals. I rewashed every bottle in the dishwasher then washed by hand with the new soap and the soap smell finally faded. This is when I purchased the Dr. Brown Sterilizer. After another round of Babyganics and a round of sterilizing the bottles finally had no soap smell! This is now the only soap that ill use!
Now I must admit I thought this was stupid at first but after the soapy milk incident this thing is amazing! I love knowing that her bottles and parts are officially clean so I’m a fan. What makes this even better is the fact that I can fit every bottle piece and pump piece in this thing which for me makes it worth every penny.
The extra bottles and parts are an absolute must! I have three pump cup sets which makes it so much easier on me when it comes to cleaning and drying. I can get through a night of pumping and not have to wash and wait for it to dry, I can just let it dry on its own after washing. Having extra bottles is pretty amazing as well. When I pump, I have one Medela bottle attached and I then have a Dr. Brown bottle attached to the other pump. That way a bottle is already ready to go and whatever was pumped into the Medela bottle can either go to storage or can help fill up the Dr. Brown bottle to make up the full feed if I didn’t produce enough with that pump. Hands down AMAZING!
This is amazing and cheap! I place the Boon counter top grass on here along with all of my other boobie goodies and a few diapers and wipes. This makes traveling up and down the stairs so much easier after a night of pumping or day of pumping if people are over.
Boobie pads for the win! I've tried a few of them and this one is so soothing and absorbing. When your boobs hurt anything that is comforting is amazing. Hands down the best!
